Local agricultural systems - their supply chains and nutrition education

Educational exchange project on the promotion of local agricultural systems, their supply chains andnutritional education.

Dear Sir or Madam,

We are a middle school in Cortemilia in the province of Cuneo in northwest Italy. We are writing to present a project that we are launching regardingthe promotion of local agricultural systems, their supply chains and nutritional education. The aim is to make this project international. It will examine important aspects of our local food systems through the analysis and comparison of the broader social relations between producers and consumers in Europe

The starting point is our territory, which provides excellent opportunities for reflecting on issues pertaining to the environment.

Cortemilia’s economy is for the most part agricultural, characterized by products that are known throughout the world. An example isthe variety of hazelnut known as “Tonda Gentile delle Langhe IGP”, a valuable ingredient in many recipes of local and industrialfoodstuffs; Nutella would be but one example. The emergence of a new focus on local perspectives has allowed the development of several interesting initiatives in order to promote the common good of local circumstances through the use of human and natural resources.

The proposed project will be implemented through an innovative teaching method that includes activities aimed at the appreciationand promotion of local European varieties. It is aimed at students between the ages of 12 and 15, a decisive age for increasing food and nutrition awareness. The international nature of the project will foster dialogue between schools and European farms and their relatedchains of production, further allowing collaborative development; indeed, the project foresees exchangesamong the participatingschools.

We would be pleased to provide more information about becoming involved in this project; do not hesitate to contact us in the event you are interested.

Thank you in advance for your time and attention.

Yours faithfully,

Giuseppe Boveri
